So we are ranting about a 15 year old vehicle. And your basis for buying another one solely on the problems of a 15 year old vehicle. It isn't going to be like a new vehicle.

Before you totally meltdown, there may be a cheaper solution to your problem. I just repaired a similar issue on a friends Jeep. The blend door issue is a common problem on them, and it is a costly repair if you bring it to a mechanic or dealership. Start by doing a little bit of internet searching and see if it's a common problem with your vehicle. There may be a E-150 forum out there. In the case of the Jeep, there are a few manufacturers that make a blend door repair kit. You don't need to remove your dashboard to make the repair. This link is similar to the repair kit I bought on ebay, and it will give you an idea of what it's all about. 99-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee Automatic Temperature Heater Blend Door Repair Kit New | eBay I will also tell you that some Ford models use a cable system to control the blend door position. It's possible that the cable is broken or the housing behind the control knob is broken. It's really a pretty simple fix if it's the cable problem. I will add that if your blend door is broken and if there is a repair kit available similar to the one for a Jeep, the repair is a bit involved and you will need some mechanical experience and some patience to get it done. Good luck to you.

Googling Ford Blend Door fix may have been better than posting here.

Just saying.

Default easy fix

I hooked up a fishing line in to the heater core box to pull the flap up to engage the heat it works great

You can replace this actuator without pulling all of the above because I've done many of them in less than 3-hours.

$800.00 to $900.00 is the norm since the shop has to pay for overhead but you can do this yourself on a weekend and take your time !!!

Hi, I have a 1997 Ford E-150 Conversion Van. I love my van. It only has 100,000 miles. Problem is the Ac runs cold and blows out but when you go uphill, it sucks in like a vacuum. The does not blow the cold air back out. This comes and goes.

The rear Ac does not work anymore either. Anyone out there that can tell me what could be causing the vacuum problem? It is at the mechanics right now and he said he cannot figure it out. Thanks. Susan

In some vehicles there is a check valve that breaks/is defective. It could also have a full throttle cut off where the AC cuts out when you're going uphill at full throttle. My dodge did that. I replaced the check valve.

you can take the htr core cover off then get behind the core and put a clip and a coat hanger on the little flap door and just open and shut heat ac manually.

99 cents worth of hardware and about 5 hours work but i did mickey mouse fix it and saved 900 or so

once the dash falls apart it never goes back together quite right anyway so

...

what scares me is the spark plugs and coil packs [tune up on the triton 5.4]
ford did some terrible CHEAP chitt on the 97 van .

the seats? crap! had to go to boneyard and get some comfy gmc captains chairs instead

Your 100% right on Ford's 5.4 engine with spark plug problem. Autozone has a kit for broken off spark plugs just for the 5.4 engines. My 1997 Ford van had a 4.6 engine and I sold it before I needed to change it's spark plugs.
